New Brunswick Student Financial Assistance
The Government of New Brunswick provides financial assistance to help students pay for post-secondary education through the New Brunswick Student Financial Assistance Program. Funding may include:
- Student loans — money you must repay
- Grants and bursaries — money you do not need to repay
Financial assistance is available for both full-time and part-time students and is based on factors such as family income, educational costs, and financial need. With a single application, students are considered for both provincial and federal student aid programs.
What student financial assistance can help cover
Funding may help pay for:
- Tuition and mandatory fees
- Books and supplies (when applicable)
- Return transportation costs

Additional Eligibility information
Applying for student financial assistance
The Governments of New Brunswick and Canada work together to provide integrated student financial assistance. By submitting one application, students are assessed for:
- Government of Canada student loans and grants
- Government of New Brunswick loans, grants, and bursaries
Students can apply, upload documents, and access notifications through the:
New Brunswick Student Aid Portal
Students should also consult the 2024–2025 Student Financial Assistance Handbook and Program Highlights and Funding Information available through the portal.
Students with disabilities
Additional financial assistance and supports are available for students with disabilities.
Students applying as a student with a disability for the first time must complete a Disability Verification Form, which is completed by a qualified healthcare provider. Students previously approved typically do not need to submit a new verification form unless requested. Students with permanent disabilities may be considered full-time while studying at a reduced course load (minimum 40%).
Additional information can be found in the informational Students with Disability PDF
Students may also apply separately for the:
Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment – Students with Disabilities
This grant helps cover disability-related educational equipment and services needed to participate in post-secondary studies. A separate application is required and can only be assessed after a student aid application has been processed. View the CSG-DSE Application for 2026-2027
There is no fixed student contribution requirement for:
- Indigenous students
- Students with permanent disabilities
- Students with dependents
- Students who are, or were, children in permanent care under the Department of Social Development
Repayment Assistance Plan for Borrowers with a Permanent Disability (RAP-PD)
The Repayment Assistance Plan for Borrowers with a Permanent Disability (RAP-PD) helps borrowers with permanent disabilities who are experiencing difficulty repaying student loans.
RAP-PD considers family income, family size, and disability-related medical expenses to determine affordable repayment. Monthly payments are generally capped at 20% or less of gross family income, and some borrowers with very low income may not be required to make payments until their financial situation improves. Applications are completed through a borrower’s National Student Loans Service Centre account.
Repaying your student loans
Students are responsible for repaying any student loans borrowed according to the terms of their Master Student Financial Assistance Agreement (MSFAA).
For full-time studies, eligible federal and provincial loans are integrated into a single repayment amount, meaning students make one payment for both Canada and New Brunswick student loans. Funding details, notices of assessment, and repayment information can be accessed through the student aid portal and the loan servicing system.
The six month period before entering repayment is called the non-repayment period and you are not required to make loan payments during this period, but you can make payments if you want to. Log in to your NSLSC online account to make early payments or contact the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC)
The New Brunswick Bursary
The New Brunswick Bursary (NBB) is available to eligible full-time students whose assessed financial need exceeds the maximum available student loan amount.
Eligible students may receive up to $130 per week of study.
Renewed Tuition Bursary
The Renewed Tuition Bursary (RTB) supports eligible student financial assistance recipients attending designated public and private post-secondary institutions in New Brunswick.
The program provides non-repayable financial assistance to help reduce tuition costs and improve affordability for students from families with greater financial need.
Maximum bursary amounts include:
- Up to $3,000 for university students
- Up to $1,500 for college students
Eligibility is based on household income, family size, and other student aid requirements. Applications are available through Student Financial Services and the student aid portal.
