Canadian Hearing Services National Scholarship Program

The Canadian Hearing Services National Scholarship Program offers national scholarships to both undergrad and post-grad students attending an accredited post-secondary institution within or outside Canada, and are deaf or hard of hearing.

Trusted since 1940, the Canadian Hearing Society is the leading provider of services and products for people who are Deaf and hard of hearing to ensure barrier-free access, independence, and increased quality of life. Their scholarship program was created to do just that, and is uniquely inclusive of deaf and hard-of-hearing students of all abilities. 

Amount: $3,000 (for full-time students) ; $1,000 (for part-time students)

Criteria

In order to be considered eligible for the above scholarship, students must be:

  • a Canadian citizens or permanent resident of Canada;
  • demonstrative of documented hearing loss of 50dB or greater (pure tone average) in both ears;
  • seventeen (17) years or older, and enrolled in an accredited post-secondary institution for Fall 2026, either as a first-time or returning student;

Please note that this is a renewable scholarship, and recipients remain eligible for the same level of funding for up to four (4) years.

How to Apply

Along with the completed application form, first-time applicants must also submit:

  • a photocopy proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent residency with date of birth;
  • at least one audiogram documenting hearing loss of 50dB or greater (pure tone average) in both ears;
  • proof of Fall 2026 registration / acceptance to an accredited post-secondary institution;
  • a Community Involvement checklist, as outlined in Section 2 of the application form;
  • two (2) reference letters submitted via email by your references as outlined in Section 3 of the application form. Click the following link to access the Reference Form;
  • a personal essay (typed 12-point font and 250 words) in English or French, or a WeTransfer shared link to a 2-minute video in ASL / LSQ, as outlined in Section 4 of the application form;
  • a Canada Revenue Agency Notice of Assessment (NOA). If the individual is not supporting themselves, then their family’s NOA will need to be submitted. If the individual is independent, then they will need to provide a personal NOA and their spouse’s NOA if applicable, as outlined in Section 5 of the application form;
  • a letter of Academic Accommodation related to being Deaf or hard of hearing or Individual Education Plan (IEP), outlining academic accommodations related to being Deaf or hard of hearing, as outlined in Section 6 of the application form;

Please note that a committee of Deaf and hard-of-hearing community members, educators, industry leaders, and staff will review and select applicants. Successful applicants will be given a conditional offer shortly after the closing date of the application period, and will then be required to submit the following before receiving an award:

  • a proof of registration;
  • a signed marketing release form;
  • a social media background check;
  • an electronic funds transfer form and a void cheque;
  • a thank-you video, and a photo and marketing survey

Once secured, students may receive an annual award for up to four years. Awards may cover tuition, residence, or educational resources. A change in a student’s status will result in a change in the award amount.
