Charmaine Letourneau Scholarship

The Charmaine Letourneau Scholarship is awarded to two (2) students who are attending a post-secondary institution in Alberta, and are deaf and / or hard of hearing.

An educator and advocate, Charmaine Letourneau received the Order of Canada in 2001 in recognition of her work in improving the quality of life for Deaf people. This scholarship in her name does just that, and supports post-secondary education for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Albertans.

Criteria

In order to be considered eligible for the above scholarship, students must be:

  • a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada
  • a resident of Alberta with proof of residency (ie. driver’s license, provincial ID);
  • deaf or hard of hearing;
  • pursuing or in pursuit of an academic / training program at a qualified post-secondary / vocational school in Alberta, or at an educational institution outside of Alberta that specializes in programming for deaf and hard of hearing students;
  • demonstrative of knowledge (basic or fluent) in sign language
  • demonstrative of financial need;

Please note that priority will be given to individuals who show involvement in local deaf organizations and a demonstrated commitment as a volunteer, school or community leadership. Priority will also be given to individuals who show diligence and effort in their studies (that being, regular attendance and punctuality in school or in the workplace, a likelihood that their program of study will lead to employment or further educational opportunities, and further commitment to the qualifying program and the proposed field of study or employment)

Along with the completed application form, applicants must also submit:

  • a statement of grades per their most recent studies (unofficial transcripts are acceptable);
  • an audiogram or other medical documentation exhibiting proof of hearing loss;
  • a personal letter describing how the applicant feels they meet the award criteria and priorities;
  • two (2) reference letters from people who have known the applicant for at least six (6) months and can attest to their meeting the award criteria and priorities;

Applicants may be invited to participate in an interview (in person or via Skype / FaceTime). The interview will be conducted in ASL, or an interpreter may be present if the applicant’s knowledge of ASL is more rudimentary. Candidates will be advised of the status of their application by email in early November of each year.
