Each scholarship pays a different amount, has a different number of available positions, and has distinct requirements.
Eligibility
You must meet all the following requirements to apply:
- You are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
- You are a student at UBC Vancouver with a disability.
- You’re considered a full-time student (or approved by the Centre for Accessibility to study at a reduced course load).
- You meet the terms for awards eligibility set out in UBC’s Regulations Governing University Awards.
- If you are not registered with the Centre for Accessibility, you must also provide supporting documentation.
Each scholarship or bursary has additional eligibility requirements such as financial need, nature of disability, or demonstrated merit. Read the award descriptions to determine your eligibility for specific awards.

Scholarships
Patricia Ann MACDONALD Memorial Scholarship
A $2,050 scholarship may be awarded either in total or in part to a student with a visual impairment or physical disability. The recipient must be in a program leading to a degree, with definite vocational goals and a high grade average. The scholarship is intended to honour a student who exhibits some of Patricia Macdonald’s qualities and talents. The award is adjudicated by the Committee on Awards for Students with Disabilities.
Judith C. THIELE Memorial Scholarship
A $4,100 scholarship for students with a visual impairment or physical disability has been made available through an endowment established by family and friends in memory of Judith C. Thiele, B.A., B.L.S., co-founder and Reference and Collections Librarian, Crane Library and Resource Centre, UBC. The award is adjudicated by the Committee on Awards for Students with Disabilities, with preference given to a candidate who has been active in the area of community services.
Dennet KUAN Memorial Award
Awards totalling $2,000 have been made available through an endowment established by Janet, Jennifer, and Ryan Kuan in memory of Dennet Kuan (MBA, BSc) for undergraduate or graduate students with a physical disability in any year and faculty. The award is adjudicated by the Committee on Awards for Students with Disabilities.
Harriet Sarah BYRNE Scholarship
A scholarship of $1,100 has been made available through an endowment established in memory of Harriet Sarah Byrne. The award is intended to encourage a student with a disability or a student demonstrating an interest and ability in the problems of individuals with disabilities. Preference is given to a woman undertaking studies in the health sciences. The award is adjudicated by the Committee on Awards for Students with Disabilities.
Elizabeth M. CRICHTON-CARVER Memorial Scholarship
A $150 scholarship has been made available through an endowment established by the late John A. Carver in memory of his mother, Elizabeth M. Crichton-Carver, for a student in the Faculty of Arts. Preference is given to students with a disability. The financial circumstances of the candidate may be considered. The award is adjudicated by the Committee on Awards for Students with Disabilities.
TEJPAR-LADAK Award
Awards totalling $1,900 have been made available through an endowment established through a fundraising campaign led by Ameera Ladak (B.Com. 2016) for Bachelor of Commerce students with disabilities related to neurodiversity and/or mental health. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Committee on Awards for Students with Disabilities.
Sally Yue Lin Award in Population and Public Health
Awards totalling $2,000 have been made available annually through a gift from Sally Yue Lin (M.P.H. 2015) for domestic students in the School of Population and Public Health with disabilities related to neurodiversity and/or mental health. Preference will be given to Master of Public Health students. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Committee on Awards for Students with Disabilities.
CPA Education Foundation of BC Award for Students with Disabilities
Two awards of $2,500 each have been made available annually through a gift from the Chartered Professional Accountants’ Education Foundation (CPAEF) of BC for students with disabilities in the Accounting option of the Bachelor of Commerce and/or Diploma in Accounting programs. CPAEF aims to support and advance business and accounting education across BC by enhancing the quality and quantity of students entering the accounting profession. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Committee on Awards for Students with Disabilities.
