Empowered Kids Ontario (EKO) Student Scholarship

The Empowered Kids Ontario (EKO) Scholarship comprises of nine (9) awards, and dedicates one (1) award to a student who has received services from EKO and has a speech / communication disorder.

Since 2011, Empowered Kids Ontario (EKO) has provided assistance to students with disabilities who are pursuing post-secondary education. Their outlined goal is to help address the unemployment bias people with disabilities and developmental needs face, as nothing should stand in the way of promising young Ontarians pursuing their education and career goals.

Criteria

In order to be considered eligible for the above scholarship, students must be:

  • A Canadian citizen / permanent resident, or possessing landed immigrant / refugee status;
  • A recipient of services from at least one (1) of EKO’s General Member organizations;
  • Demonstrative of financial need;
  • Continuing education in the 2026/27 academic year, within a certificate, diploma, or degree-granting program at an OSAP-approved educational institution

Along with general / educational information, applicants must also submit:

  • A personal essay that is a maximum of 750 words, or submit a creative project that allows you to express yourself, such as a video, short story, visual artwork, music composition, or recorded performance. Your essay or creative work should address one of the following topics:
    • How have you assisted others? For example, as a volunteer, as a mentor, or as a family member;
    • Describe people or events that inspire you. It could be a mentor, a historical or current event, a work of art such as, a book, film, performance, painting, or sculpture;
    • Describe what motivates you to enter the program of your choice and how you intend to apply what you learn;
  • Two letters of recommendation. Give recommenders time to prepare a thoughtful letter;
  • A Letter from the EKO General Member agency confirming that you received services;
